This is now closed for comments. The Department of Planning today released the Planning Provisions for Affordable Housing discussion paper for public comment.

Director General Eric Lumsden said the Department is seeking feedback from stakeholders and members of the public on the best way to use the planning system to support the delivery of affordable housing.

“There are many ways that the planning system can be used to support the delivery of affordable housing and a range of different approaches are used across Australia,” Mr Lumsden said.

“Through this discussion paper, the State Government is seeking feedback from stakeholders to help it determine the approach that is best for WA.”

Feedback will be used to inform the Government’s policy position regarding the use of planning provisions to deliver affordable housing.
“By improving the supply of affordable housing, more West Australians will have the chance to rent or buy housing that meets their needs and that they can afford,” he said.

“That means that people on low incomes, workers in key industries like health, police and community services, and first homebuyers will all have a better chance at finding a home.”

The discussion paper has been prepared in response to the State Affordable Housing Strategy 2010-2020: Opening Doors to Affordable Housing. The Strategy commits the State Government to explore opportunities for the planning system to facilitate the development of affordable housing.

The State Government has delivered more than 10,000 affordable homes under its Affordable Homes Strategy, well on track to its target of 20,000 by 2020.

Stakeholders and members of the public are asked to send their submissions to affordablehousing@planning.wa.gov.au by Monday 9 December 2013.
