The Honourable Premier Colin Barnett visited the Department of Housing on Tuesday 16 December to acknowledge Housing recently winning the overall award for Public Sector Excellence and the ‘Developing the Economy’ award in the 2014 Premier’s Awards for its Shared Equity Expression of Interest (EOI) Program.
The Premier was joined by the newly appointed Minister for Housing, the Honourable Colin Holt, who was making his first visit to the Department. Other guests included the Public Sector Commissioner Mal Wauchope, representatives from KeyStart, key partners from the building and land development sector who partnered with Housing through the Shared Equity EOI, and a range of Housing staff.
The function at head office was opened by Grahame Searle, Director General, who took to the stage to introduce the Shared Equity Program before guests watched the Department’s submission video.
“As the 2014 overall winner of the coveted Premier’s Awards, the Shared Equity EOI Program demonstrates the Department’s unique ability to leverage our commercial operations to provide social housing outcomes for the most vulnerable.
“Through partnerships and innovations such as Shared Start, we continue to deliver affordable home ownership opportunities and a social housing safety net for thousands of Western Australians.
“We are able to achieve these fantastic results because of our unique mix of commercial and social policy functions, and our mindset of partnering rather than competing with business,” Mr Searle said.
Since 2010, more than 17,000 affordable opportunities have been delivered under the Affordable Housing Strategy 2010-2020 in collaboration with public, private and not-for-profit sector partners.
The Premier congratulated the Department on a genuinely innovative program in Shared Start and the ongoing partnership between State Government and industry. The Premier also noted that home ownership helped produce financial, social and community stability in Australia.
