The Housing We'd Choose: Study casts light on the housing Perth chooses

  • Study explores what matters most for those in Perth and Peel in terms of housing
  • Study finds a mismatch between the housing people want and what is available
The State Government today released The Housing We’d Choose: a study for Perth and Peel an independent report which surveyed more than 1,000 people over a period of six months about what matters most for them in terms of housing.

Department of Housing Director General Grahame Searle said that the report found that while most respondents still favour owning a separate house, they were prepared to make significant trade-offs in location, house type and size to realise their dreams of owning a home.

“This report reveals the enduring aspirations of many Western Australians to own a home, and their willingness to make concessions in order to afford it,” he said.

“The report supports the directions outlined in the State Government’s Affordable Housing Strategy 2010-2020 and highlights the importance of government providing affordable options to assist people in buying their own home. We have already provided 7,600 affordable homes on schedule to meet our target of 20,000 by 2020.”

Department of Planning Director General Eric Lumsden said that the key findings in the report showed that there is a strong preference for people to live in the inner regions with easy access to work.

“The outcomes of the report complement the extensive work that has been carried out in Directions 2031 and Beyond and Activity Centres policies,” he said.

“The study is an important snapshot, which shows that the combination of affordability pressures and desire to live in well-connected locations is driving an evolution in housing.

“We expect to see these evolve further in coming years, as the ageing population and other demographic shifts drive housing demand in the Perth-Peel region.”

The State Government and industry continue to work collaboratively to help deliver more diverse housing options more quickly to the market, and to remove barriers and disincentives for residential developers, particularly in inner areas.
