Housing Authority has been working to deliver service worker accommodation in regional communities under the Affordable Housing Strategy 2010-2020 and Royalties for Regions Delivering Affordable Housing to Key Workers in Regional Western Australia Program.
The lack of affordable housing in Pilbara towns such as Port Hedland, Onslow and Newman has had a significant impact on local businesses and their employees.
In June 2012, the State Government announced a Royalties for Regions-supported housing package to ease the pressure on Port Hedland’s housing shortage and high rents. The package included the provision of 125 service worker homes across Port and South Hedland to immediately address the shortage of accommodation for service workers in the town whilst a longer term solution was being created through the Osprey Key Worker Village.
