New crisis and transitional accommodation for men has been unveiled in the heart of Perth.
- New accommodation for Perth’s homeless men
- Up to 102 bedrooms with centralised support services
- Four-storey facility boosts crisis and transitional accommodation for men
Housing Minister Bill Marmion said The Salvation Army’s new $23.3million (not including GST) four-storey hostel would provide much-needed accommodation for homeless men in the city.
Located on the corner of Aberdeen and Nash streets, The Beacon Men’s Hostel replaces the Lentara hostel for homeless men, built in the 1970s.
“The new hostel offers up to 102 bedrooms with ensuite and desk facilities for men seeking accommodation for up to six months,” Mr Marmion said.
“The Salvation Army will deliver a range of centralised services on the ground floor including employment assistance, referrals to drug and alcohol services, ‘Street to Home’ program, communal kitchens and training courses - all from the one location.
“At almost double the capacity of the Lentara hostel, The Beacon is a great example of the State Government partnering with the not-for-profit sector and private industry to increase the supply of social housing.”

The facility was funded through a $16.21million (not including GST) grant from the Department of Housing from the Federal Government’s Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan. The Salvation Army supplied land to the value of $5million; raised about $4million in donations and pledges through their Doorways of Hope Appeal; and allocated a further $790,000 to the project.
Additional funding of $2.3million was received from the State Government through Lotterywest.
The Department for Child Protection and Family Support supplied operational funding for off-site temporary accommodation for Lentara tenants during construction and ongoing operational funding for The Beacon.
