The completion of an eighteen-unit complex in Halls Creek marks a significant milestone for two major housing programs providing accommodation for government workers and employees of Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) in regional Western Australia.

This is the 400th Government Regional Officer Housing (GROH) property, and 58th non-government organisation (NGO) property constructed under the Housing Our Workers initiative.

Director Housing Programs Peter Lonsdale said the GROH program provided houses for key government workers such as police, nurses, teachers and child protection officers in regional WA.

“The initiative is important as a shortage of affordable housing in regional locations has a significant impact on the government’s and NGOs capacity to accommodate employees.”

The Halls Creek complex consists of 14 two-bedroom and four three-bedroom double storey units.

They will house employees from the Department for Child Protection, Department of Education, Department of Corrective Services and a number of NGOs.

“The delivery of this complex, and others like it, ensures that these workers can now afford to live and work in the communities they support,” Peter said.

“It also helps government agencies and NGOs attract and retain quality people to positions in regional areas.”

The combined $235million program, funded through Royalties for Regions, has been successful in delivering suitable and affordable housing in regional locations across the State.

“Under this initiative, the Department has delivered 458 properties in 69 local government areas across eight regions,” he said.
The towns where most properties have been constructed include Karratha, Newman, Carnarvon, Derby, Kununurra, Mount Barker, Katanning and Kalgoorlie.
